ARTP Sleep Practitioner CPAP Certificate
(Advanced)
Overview
This certificate is for candidates working in the field of the treatment and management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS).
• There are 6 sections, including candidate CV and background of the department, type of CPAP used, how it works and quality assurance and infection control measures, understanding the different interfaces and adjuncts to CPAP therapy including the use of data to help optimise treatment, interpretation of therapy data and using this to inform and direct decision making, understanding the importance of optimal compliance and usage.
• 4 case studies will be required including sleep disordered breathing including OSAHS, unsuccessful therapy, complex sleep apnoea and intolerant to CPAP therapy.
• There will be two types of assessments required in the form of direct observation of practical skills (DOPS) and case based discussion (CBD).
- The DOP's will require the candidate undertaking assessments demonstrating the skills in CPAP set up, interface fitting and troubleshooting, advice to patients to improve compliance and downloading patient data with the ability to recognise key features.
- The CBD's will be focused on CPAP set up and CPAP review, selecting a patient pathway of the candidates choosing.
Target Audience
The ARTP Sleep Practitioner Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Competency Certificate is intended for those candidates working in the field of the treatment and management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS) who are employed as either:
a) A qualified practitioner (NHS - AfC Band 5 and above) in the NHS providing CPAP therapy to patients with a confirmed diagnosis of OSAHS in a hospital or primary care clinic setting.
b) An employee of an Independent Sector Commercial Service working at an advanced level, with a relevant graduate qualification, providing CPAP therapy directly to patients with a confirmed diagnosis of OSAHS in their own homes.
Candidates’ duties will include:
1. Providing a CPAP device, with or without a humidifier, to patients as an independent practitioner.
2. Setting up a CPAP device to provide the appropriate mode of operation and settings.
3. Selecting an appropriate interface from a range of types (Nasal or Full-Face Mask, Nasal Cushions/Pillows, Oral Mask, etc.) for the patient, choosing the correct size and making all necessary adjustments to ensure comfortable fit without leaks.
4. Providing training to the patient in the safe and effective use of the CPAP device and how to make device adjustments prescribed as enabled for that specific patient.
5. Administration of the department/company device and accessories inventory.
6. Performing patient compliance checks, trouble shooting and long-term intervention, making adjustments to therapy as required from time to time.
7. Downloading and interpreting compliance and performance data from the CPAP device as required.
8. Making adjustments to therapy and/or interface(s) as required from time to time.
9. Providing reports, either paper based or electronically as required for the patient record.
10. Cleaning and disinfection of accessories and devices in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Health Service/Company infection control procedures.
Evidence of prior Learning/Training
As part of the registration process candidates will be required to provide details of prior learning and relevant training and experience which may be on the job training, on secondment, or in a more formal setting.
Portfolio of Evidence
Candidates will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence, consisting of a number of sections, within 6 months.
