Promoting education and quality assured respiratory physiology has always been at the forefront of ARTP objectives.

ARTP is a registered charity originally founded as a single national committee with 32 members in 1976.

  • 1976

    On 12th June 1976 the inaugural meeting of the ARTP took place at the Brompton Hospital where the constitution was agreed and Len Smith became the first Chair.

    Sally Gough became the second Chair of ARTP.

    Derek Cramer became third Chair of ARTP.

    Sue Hill becomes the fourth Chair of ARTP.

     The first National Assessment Part I Exam was set up in 1986

    Brendan Cooper becomes 5th Chair of ARTP.

    Through links with BTS a joint examination board (ARTP/BTS) was approved in 1992

    The first Part II Practical Examinations was completed in 2004.

    Damian Muncaster becomes the 6th Chair of ARTP.

    In June 2008 ARTP convened the ARTP Sleep Apnoea Consortium to raise the profile of sleep apnoea through training, standards of care, and qualifications and as a means of sharing knowledge, expertise and information.

    Martyn Bucknall becomes the seventh Chair of ARTP.

    Karl Sylvester becomes the eighth Chair of ARTP.

    “A Guide to Performing Quality Assured Diagnostic Spirometry” was published in 2013 in collaboration with British Lung Foundation, Education for Health, Asthma UK, NHS, British Thoracic Society, Primary Care Respiratory Society and Primary Care Commissioning.

    A national spirometry register led to an online Spirometry certification course being launched in 2018 to allow any healthcare professional performing spirometry to demonstrate their competency.

    Julie Lloyd becomes the ninth Chair of ARTP.

    Joanna Shakespeare becomes the tenth Chair of ARTP.

    The first formal ARTP Strategy was launched with the vision statement 'To be the leading organisation advancing excellence in respiratory and sleep technology and physiology, ensuring high-quality care for patients and professional fulfilment for our workforce'.
