Working in the UK

In the United Kingdom, the Respiratory Therapist role does not exist and is separated across a few different job roles:

  • Critical Care Scientists
  • Respiratory Physiotherapists
  • Respiratory Physiologists
  • Respiratory Clinical Scientists

Respiratory and Sleep physiologists are involved in a wide range of respiratory and sleep investigations including; Pulmonary function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, bronchial challenge testing and sleep studies.
As an International candidate, if you have experience and relevant qualifications, you could apply for one of these job roles. Most of these current job vacancies are advertised though the https://www.trac.jobs website.

ARTP receives many queries from overseas healthcare professionals who ask how they can travel to and work with the UK. It is important to understand that ARTP is not a regulatory body and regulatory bodies such as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) are responsible for assessing and making sure individuals have the necessary qualifications and/or experience to practise as a Respiratory and Sleep Scientist in the UK. For further information, please see the links that are provided below.

ARTP Workforce Committee has produced a short guide to working in the UK which will hopefully answer many of your questions. It can be downloaded below. It covers a range of topics including:

  • How to search for jobs
  • Where and how to apply for registration
  • Resources where you can obtain further information
