ARTP Fellowships

In 2025, ARTP launched its Fellowship Policy. The ARTP Fellowship programme recognises individuals who have demonstrated sustained excellence, leadership, and significant contributions to respiratory and/or sleep physiology and the wider aims of the Association. Fellowship status represents the highest level of professional recognition within the ARTP.

Fellowship strengthens ARTP’s authority and credibility when engaging with external stakeholders, enhances opportunities for mentorship and professional development, and builds a visible community of leaders who embody best practice. This programme will foster professional pride, long-term engagement with the Association, and ensure that ARTP continues to influence and shape the future of respiratory/sleep healthcare at national and international levels.

Fellow

The award of ARTP Fellow is made to members of the ARTP who have made an exceptional and sustained contribution to the profession, the ARTP, and/or the development of respiratory and/or sleep healthcare science. For consideration for Fellow of the ARTP, the applicant muct possess full member status for at least ten years prior to the year of nomination. In addition, the Fellowship applicant must meet three of the five prerequisites listed below which are aligned to the current ARTP strategy.

Service to the Professional Body
For example - Actively engaged in the professional body and its activities (e.g. demonstrated commitment and contribution as a Council, Executive Board or Committee member or delivery on Taskforce/Membership projects).

Education and Training
For example - Established reputation in the training and education of Respiratory and/or Sleep Physiologists/Scientists. Significant contribution to ARTP assessment and examination processes. 

Innovation
For example - Served as a Principal Investigator involved in original research, significantly contributing to the advancement of Respiratory and/or Sleep physiology. Recipient of major research grants. Demonstrates consistent scholarly production in the form of journal articles and/or book chapters and/or abstracts at National and International conferences with a focus on Respiratory and/or Sleep physiology.

Workforce
For example – Responsibility for the delivery of Respiratory and/or Sleep diagnostic services. Evidence of mentorship and support of professional development for others. A demonstrable record of leadership or influence in Respiratory and/or Sleep physiology or associated domains. 

Quality
For example – Significant contributions to professional policy and/or standards. Demonstration of commitment to and contribution to professional quality standards through recognised national/international accreditation programmes. Evidence of commitment to quality improvement standards and processes. 

Application and Nomination Process

  • Fellows may be nominated by peers or apply directly.
  • The application window for fellowship status will be advertised annually by the nominations committee.
  • A supporting statement of evidence must be submitted, addressing eligibility criteria.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the ARTP Fellowship Panel, composed of Nominations Committee members and existing Fellows. 

Recognition and Benefits

  • Fellows may use the title ARTP Fellow.
  • Fellowship will be announced via official ARTP channels and may be presented at the ARTP Annual Conference.
  • Fellows may be encouraged to contribute to ARTP activities such as mentoring, reviewing, public speaking, and advisory groups

Duration and Maintenance

Fellowship is considered awarded for life, subject to:

  • Continued membership of ARTP
  • Adherence to professional standards and codes of conduct

If membership lapses or is withdrawn, the individual may no longer use the title ARTP Fellow.

 

Honorary Fellowship

Honorary Fellowship is awarded to individuals who may or not be members of the ARTP but have made an outstanding contribution to respiratory and/or sleep physiology, education, innovation, or advocacy aligned with the ARTP's mission. As Honorary Fellowship's replaced the previous ARTP Special Awards, past awardess have been conferred Honorary Fellowship status. The full list of Honorary Fellowships can be viewed here.

President and Special Recognition Awards

ARTP confers additional awards which includes the Presidents Award and the Special Recognition Award.

ARTP Presidents Award

The Presidents award recognises the commitment to excellence and advancement of the respiratory and sleep community of any specific individual who has been nominated by the outgoing ARTP Honorary President in order to celebrate their achievements. Awardees are conferred Honorary Fellowship status.

Special Recognition Award

The Special Recognition Award is conferred by the outgoing Honorary Chair or Executive Council/Board where it is felt that an individuals significant contribution to respiratory and/or sleep science/medicine is deserved of recognition by the Association. Awardees are conferred Honorary Fellowship status.

Special Awards

In the year 2000, the ARTP launched the ARTP Special Awards. These awards represented the highest expression of recognition for sustained advancement of respiratory and sleep science or respiratory and sleep medicine. They recognised and celebrated the outstanding performance by a member of the respiratory and sleep community whose career had been distinguished by a continued commitment to excellence in science, research, and leadership. Leadership was demonstrated by the individual’s scientific achievements and sustained commitment to building ARTP as a vibrant organisation adapted to future needs. Additionally, the award recognised efforts in support of colleagues and the mentoring of young scientists.

ARTP Professor Will Man Aspiring Researcher Award

The ARTP Professor Will Man Aspiring Researcher Award was created due to a charitable donation by Professor Will Man after completing his tenure as the ARTP President in 2026. This award celebrates and recognises the achievements of budding new researchers at the beginning of their career in respiratory and sleep science. It honours those who stand out in research and innovation at an early stage and show true promise to develop as a leading researcher.

This annual award includes a bursary of £250 towards the cost of registration and/or travel for attendance at a conference/course and has been funded for the next five years (up to and including 2030). By nominating someone for this award, it helps to acknowledge the current achievements of emerging researchers in respiratory and sleep science and encourages and inspires the next generation of respiratory and sleep scientists.

ARTP Peter Moxon Rising Star Award

The ARTP Peter Moxon Rising Star Award was established in memory of our colleague Peter Moxon, who we sadly lost at the end of 2022. This award celebrates and recognises the achievements of those at the beginning of their career in respiratory and sleep science and shines a spotlight on their success and champions the organisations that do the most to develop new talent.

By nominating someone for this award, it helps to acknowledge the current achievements of emerging people in respiratory and sleep science, in addition to encouraging and inspiring next generation of respiratory and sleep scientists.

To be considered for the ARTP Peter Moxon Rising Star Award, a nominee’s work must be evidenced through a written nomination using the nomination form and relating to the nomination guidance.

ARTP Lyn Davies Award

The Lyn Davies award was created to honour the memory of Lyn Davies a departed colleague and close friend to the ARTP. The award is shared with the British Sleep Society (BSS) and is presented bi-annually to the presenter of the best sleep poster at the ARTP Annual Conference. 

ARTP Student & Graduate Awards

As part of the conference award ceremony (held during the Friday night Gala Dinner), all those who completed their Professional Qualifications since the last conference, will have the opportunity to be presented with a printed copy of their certificate on stage. In addtion, the following Awards are also presented:

Suzanne Davies Award - This award is given to the candidate(s) who achieves the highest grade in the ARTP Associate Professional Qualification

Sue Hazard Award - This award is given to the candidate(s) who achieves the highest grade in the ARTP Practitioner Professional Qualification

John Cotes Award - This award is given to the candidate(s) who achieves the highest grade in the ARTP Practitioner Clinical Qualification

 

ARTP Research & Innovation Awards

Dame Sue Hill Award - This award is given to the best Oral abstract presentation at the ARTP Annual Conference

Nick Chapman Award - This award is given to the best respiratory poster abstract at the ARTP Annual Conference

Best QIPS Poster Award - This award is given to the best QIPS poster abstract at the ARTP Annual Conference

Best Sleep Poster Award - This award is given to the best Sleep poster abstract at the ARTP Annual Conference on years where the Lyn Davies award is not being presented by ARTP

Best STP Poster Award - This award is given to the STP student with the best Respiratory/Sleep/QIPS poster abstract ath the ARTP Annual Conference
