The below organisations offer funding for research projects

National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)

NIHR are the nation's largest funder of health and care research and provide the people, facilities and technology that enables research to thrive. Working in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients and the public, we deliver and enable world-class research that transforms people's lives, promotes economic growth and advances science.

NIHR are primarily funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, but also receive UK Aid funding to support research for people in low- and middle-income countries.

Medical Research Council (MRC)

Scientists apply to the MRC for funding for their research and applications are reviewed by panels of independent experts.

The MRC’s mission is to:

  • encourage and support research to improve human health
  • produce skilled researchers
  • advance and disseminate knowledge and technology to improve the quality of life and economic competitiveness of the UK
  • promote dialogue with the public about medical research

British Lung Foundation (BLF)

The British Lung Foundation is an excellent resource for patients and families. They aim to prevent lung disease by campaigning for positive change in the UK's lung health and raise awareness about lung disease, the dangers that cause it, and how to look after your lungs (at their core they want to prevent, treat and cure lung diseases.). They provide access to:

  • up-to-date information about lung diseases
  • telephone helpline, email, support groups and web community for those wanting more support, information or advice.
