ARTP Statement on Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing 2021

ARTP is delighted to announce the long awaited publication of the ‘Statement on Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing 2021’ in BMJ Open Respiratory Research.

The document uses current scientific knowledge and best practice, where available, to provide comprehensive guidance for performing standardised Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing in the clinical setting. Recommendations are offered regarding specific requirements and considerations for CPET, test protocol selection, testing equipment, appropriate personnel, environmental and patient factors and test safety that may influence the performance and interpretation of CPET. The recommendations incorporate procedures to ensure quality assured diagnostic measurement and is aimed at healthcare professionals who plan to, or currently, perform CPET in the clinical setting.

We are indebted to many experts who have contributed their time, wisdom, experience and expertise to ensure this statement came to fruition. Our special thanks go to ARTP Patron Professor Greg Whyte, for his endorsement and excellent foreword/abstract and ARTP President Dr James Hull for clinical advice and support.

We hope that this document enables our members and other healthcare professionals to deliver the highest quality cardiopulmonary exercise testing, which is the hallmark of ARTP.
