We are pleased to share with you the ARTP Standard: Appointment of Consultant Clinical Scientists in Respiratory and Sleep Science, developed by the Workforce Committee and approved by the ARTP Board.
This guidance provides a nationally consistent framework to support employers and services in planning, recruiting, and appointing Consultant Clinical Scientists. It sets out clear expectations around training routes, professional registration, governance, role scope, and remuneration, and reflects current best practice across respiratory and sleep services.
As diagnostic pathways become more complex and services continue to evolve, consultant-level scientific leadership is increasingly important in supporting high-quality, safe, and effective patient care. This standard aims to strengthen career pathways, support workforce sustainability, and promote consistency across organisations.
We hope this document will be a valuable resource for members, employers, and partners, and will support the continued development and recognition of advanced and consultant scientific roles within our profession.
We would like to thank all those who contributed to the development of this guidance, including colleagues who provided case studies and professional input.
The document is available here, and we encourage members to share it within their organisations and networks.
