New portfolio launch including updates to standards and guidance

03 June 2026 (Last updated: 14 Jul 2026 13:39)

Dear ARTP Members,

We are pleased to inform you that Version 3 of the ARTP Spirometry Portfolio is now live.

Over the past year, following an extensive review process involving candidate feedback and collaboration with key spirometry stakeholders, the ARTP Spirometry Committee has introduced a revised portfolio that continues to assess practitioners against national standards while improving accessibility and relevance across a range of healthcare settings.

Key changes include:

• A greater focus on the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), with a new SOP template now available here or in candidate's spirometry portals

• Removal of the requirement for candidates to collect and calculate normal ranges from 10 physiological control traces.

• Retention of the requirement to demonstrate understanding and implementation of physiological control as part of quality-assured spirometry practice.

• Continued requirement for candidates to submit 10 patient traces meeting ARTP acceptability and repeatability criteria.

• A new requirement to submit flow-volume loops for all three technically acceptable manoeuvres to support assessment of acceptability criteria.

The updated ARTP Spirometry Standards document can be accessed here

All candidates enrolling from 1st June 2026 onwards will automatically be enrolled onto Version 3 of the portfolio. Existing candidates and those completing the Audit Portfolio have been provided with guidance on the transition arrangements.

We hope these changes strike the right balance between maintaining robust assessment standards and supporting healthcare professionals delivering spirometry across a variety of clinical settings.

Thank you for your continued support of ARTP spirometry standards and quality-assured respiratory diagnostics.

Best wishes,

ARTP Spirometry Committee
