Consultant and speciality registrar medical professionals in sleep medicine.\n\nAim\nThis two day course will build on the foundations of the basic sleep course and will focus on the theory and practical aspects of diagnosing and treating both sleep breathing disorders and neurological sleep disorders. It will cover the physiology and pathophysiology of sleep disorders, related diagnostics and their treatments. The course will cover adult and paediatric sleep.\n\nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of the course delegates will:\n• Understand the physiology of normal sleep in adults and children, including neurophysiology, sleep control mechanisms, sleep stages and the interaction between sleep and breathing.\n• Know and understand the main sleep breathing disorders, their defining criteria and the pathophysiology behind them.\n• Know and understand the main neurological sleep disorders and the difference between REM and NREM parasomnias.\n• Understand the different types of sleep diagnostic tests available and be able to select the appropriate test depending on the reason for referral / suspected diagnosis.\n• Know and understand scoring criteria for interpretation of diagnostic studies in adults, children and infants.\n• Know and understand the variety of ventilation therapies for sleep breathing disorders and when to use them.\n• Know the principles of mandibular advancements devices, when to use them, and how to advise subjects on using MAD devices.\n• Understand non-mechanical therapies including sleep hygiene, behavioural therapies, light therapy and pharmacological therapies for a wide variety of sleep disorders.\n\n DTSTART:20260319T151400Z DTEND:20260320T151400Z LOCATION:Birmingham City Centre END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
